Who we are

India Institute is an independent, not-for-profit public charitable trust registered in India. Our website address is: https://indiai.org

India Institute is the data controller for personal data collected through this website. For any privacy-related queries or to exercise your rights, write to us at indiai@indiai.org.

What data we collect and why

We collect personal data only when you voluntarily provide it – through our contact form or newsletter signup. This data (name and email address) is used solely to respond to your enquiry or send you publications and updates you have requested. We do not sell, share, or rent your data to third parties.

Comments

If and when visitors are able to leave comments on this site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection. An anonymised string created from your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to check if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available at: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval, your profile picture may be visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Newsletter

If you subscribe to our newsletter, your name and email address are stored with Mailchimp, our email service provider. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send you. Mailchimp’s privacy policy is available at: https://mailchimp.com/legal/privacy/

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies

Our website uses cookies in the following limited ways:

  • Contact form: if you use our contact form, a cookie may be saved in your browser for convenience. This contains no sensitive personal data and expires after one year.
  • Analytics: if we use analytics tools, anonymised cookies may be set to help us understand how visitors use the site. No personally identifiable information is collected through analytics.
  • Embedded content: pages on this site include embedded content from YouTube and other platforms. These websites may set their own cookies when you interact with their content.

Embedded content from other websites

Pages on this site may include embedded content such as YouTube videos. Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if you had visited those websites directly. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, and monitor your interaction with that content.

How long we retain your data

Contact form enquiries are retained for as long as necessary to respond to your query and for a reasonable period thereafter. Newsletter subscriber data is retained until you unsubscribe. If comments are enabled in future, comments and their metadata will be retained until deletion is requested.

Your rights

Regardless of where you are located, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Withdraw consent for any data processing you previously agreed to
  • Receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you

To exercise any of these rights, write to us at tech@indiai.org. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe and in compliance with applicable law, including India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023.

Where your data is sent

Newsletter data is processed by Mailchimp, which is based in the United States. Mailchimp complies with applicable international data transfer frameworks. Visitor comments, if enabled, may be checked through an automated spam detection service. No other personal data is transferred outside India Institute’s systems.
